In general, our second-generation MagicTrap Water works exactly the same as the previous version. There are a few differences in how the device is used, which you can find here.
Of course, we’ve also made technical improvements to the device so that it’s even better suited to field conditions. Below, we’ve put together an overview of the changes for you:
- Improved antenna: A new antenna has been installed in the camera modules, which further increases transmission power.
- Higher camera resolution: Our new module features a camera with a resolution of 16 megapixels. This makes it possible to capture significantly sharper images than with the previous module, which had a resolution of 8 megapixels.
- Autofocus: Thanks to its built-in autofocus, our new camera delivers sharper images even under challenging conditions. This provides significantly more flexibility in use compared to the fixed-focus camera in the first-generation module.
- Flash: In addition to the improved camera, a flash is now also built in. If the ambient conditions are too dark, the MagicTrap 2 Water detects this and activates the flash.

LED Status Bars:
This change is immediately noticeable: Instead of a single LED bar with 3 built-in LEDs, the MagicTrap 2 Water features two separate LED bars, each with 4 LEDs, allowing you to determine the device’s status at a glance.
- One bar indicates the battery charge level, while the other bar shows the signal strength.
- There is also a separate LED that flashes during data uploads.

GPS Module:
The device now has a built-in GPS module for location tracking. This feature is not yet available in the app, which means the location must be set manually during setup.
Coming soon: We’re working on making the GPS information available in the app as well! - Improved Weather Protection: Like the first generation, the MagicTrap 2 Water is designed for the harsh conditions in the field. A few examples of these improvements include the screw mounts and enhanced seals. Please be sure to remove the housing from the field at the end of the season to store the trap in optimal condition (dry, frost-free, with a good battery).
